STREET SMARTS Updated December 11, 2009

The Highland Park Police Department and Human Relations Commission (HRC) have joined forces for the purpose of promoting a new traffic safety initiative entitled “Street Smarts.” This initiative begins in January of 2010 and will focus on improving driving behaviors and increasing pedestrian safety throughout Highland Park, with special attention given to the Central Business District (CBD).

This initiative embraces the pillars of the Character Counts program and will remind motorists and pedestrians about their responsibility to obey traffic laws pertaining to stop signs, illegal u-turns, and yielding to pedestrians and vehicles. The intention of the Street Smarts program is to gain voluntary compliance with related traffic laws in an effort to increase public safety. Street Smarts traffic and pedestrian messaging will be incorporated onto high visibility banners and signs on approaches to the CBD and at other key locations within the City.

More information about the Street Smarts traffic safety initiative is located on the City’s Web site at www.cityhpil.com. The joint Street Smarts traffic safety initiative was created in response to on-going resident, Police Department and HRC concerns about dangerous driving behavior in the City and the CBD, which can place pedestrians and motorists at risk in the event of a vehicular or pedestrian accident.
