WATER TREATMENT PLANT

Updated July 28, 2009

The City of Highland Park's Water Treatment Facility provides potable water for all water customers. The Water Treatment Plant, located at the east end of Park Avenue on Lake Michigan, is currently rated at 21 million gallons per day (MGD).

The City of Highland Park contractually provides water to the municipalities of Deerfield, Lincolnshire, and Bannockburn, while also providing such service to the Glenbrook Sanitary District and Fort Sheridan. The City has the capability to provide water on an emergency basis to Northbrook, Highwood, Lake Forest, and Glencoe. Conversely, the City is able to receive water from Lake Forest and Northbrook in the event of an emergency.

In 2002, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency conducted a federally mandated Source Water Assessment of Highland Park. Please click here to view the complete assessment.

Highland Park supports Smart Irrigation Month
Save water, save money and see better results

Automatic sprinklers systems can be a convenient and effective tool to maintain a healthy lawn. However, care must be taken to avoid wasteful over-watering. Inefficient irrigation wastes not only water but also the energy required to purify and pump that water. The key to efficient outdoor irrigation is applying just enough water and only when necessary. Water-wise habits will result in a healthier lawn and landscape, in addition to conserving water.

Please visit the Irrigation Association website to learn how you can do your part to conserve our natural resources. Don't forget to check the 'Fast Tips' tab to find out how you can best manage your irrigation system and conserve water.

Due to rapid evaporation, midday watering is inefficient and wasteful. For this reason, the City prohibits sprinkling between the hours of 12:00 noon and 6:00 p.m. from May 15th through September 15th.
